la playa bistro

San Diego, CA

Named after the region in Point Loma where the restaurant is located, La Playa bistro blends the local maritime tradition and a rich material palette, to create a new neighborhood gathering place for locals to get together and enjoy inspired cuisine. The connection to the ocean plays a large part in the menu and the rusticated materials chosen for the restaurant. From the seashell and glass textured concrete wall under the bar and its mahogany planked surface, to the wood slat accents and the fabric ceiling, one can’t help but feel the influence of life on the water. The colors of the restaurant are taken from the breath-taking sunsets just over the hill. With La Playa bistro, we strive to create a place where people can share great food in an intimate setting as beautiful and relaxing as the one they enjoy outside.

design + construction

We took on various phases of the project including the bench, the hostess stand, the bar face, the wine rack, the planters, the screen wall, and the ceiling panels, in order to preserve the design while maintaining the budget for the project.  We even had the owners of the project hands-on constructing the sedimentary wall that became the face of the bar.  This was a culmination of everything we learned in construction and design in one project.
